...Unconditional Surrender?
JUDGE ANDREW NAPOLITANO: …is really rather remarkable, Professor Mearsheimer, about unconditional surrender. Chris, cut number 14.
VIDEO CLIP BEGINS:
Marc Caputo: You had talked about you only wanted unconditional surrender, and well, the MOU doesn’t look like unconditional surrender.
President Trump: Well, it really probably is unconditional surrender. It is. I think so.
VIDEO CLIP ENDS
JUDGE ANDREW NAPOLITANO: I mean, is this a rational thinker to say something like those 14 points is even remotely unconditional? So it’s unconditional surrender on our side, not on theirs.
JOHN MEARSHEIMER: That’s what I was going to say. It is unconditional surrender. He wasn’t telling a lie, at least in that clip that I saw. He was admitting that we basically caved on every point.
And as I said to you a few minutes ago, we had no choice here. It’s just very important to understand that there are all sorts of people who are unhappy with the deal. Obviously, the Israelis and their supporters and the super hawks in this country. But the question you want to ask them is, what’s the alternative here? Go back to bombing? Are you serious? That’s not possible. Maintain the status quo? No.
Trump understood that. He understood that if he didn’t shut this down immediately, we would face an economic catastrophe. Those are his words.
Comparing to Versailles: Did Iran Get Everything It Wanted?
JUDGE ANDREW NAPOLITANO: The last American president to sign a major geopolitical agreement— you know where I’m going— in the Palace of Versailles was Woodrow Wilson ending World War I, one of the most catastrophic agreements in modern history because it brought us to World War II and all the horrible things that that spawned. And yet Trump thinks he signed a document that indicates the other side caved to him. Isn’t this essentially what the Iranians sought back in April, Professor Mearsheimer?
JOHN MEARSHEIMER: Yes, I think the Iranians have gotten everything that they wanted. It’s really quite remarkable, but President Trump again had no choice.
You want to remember with regard to Woodrow Wilson and what happened at Versailles, we won World War I. We were on the winning side. It was us, the British, and the French who came out the victors, and it was the Germans who were defeated. This is a fundamentally different situation. The United States entered a war thinking that it was going to win a spectacular victory, and instead it was a spectacular defeat. And President Trump just came to recognize that. I mean, I give him credit for recognizing where we are and doing everything he can now to get out of it.
And you have this really amazing situation where the administration— here we’re talking mainly about Trump and Vice President Vance — are really lowering the boom on the Israelis. They’re playing hardball with the Israelis in ways that I never imagined would be possible, at least in my lifetime. But that just tells you how dangerous the economic situation is, the mere fact that we’re putting such enormous pressure on the Israelis.
And of course, the Israelis don’t have the good sense to understand that at this point, Trump has no choice. And their best strategy is not to push back against Trump, but to go along with Trump and do everything they can to minimize the damage. The idea that they’re going to throw Trump off course and get him to go back to bombing is delusional. He cannot afford to do that. He’s got to make this deal work.
And if the Israelis are an obstacle in Trump’s way, Trump is going to have to push that obstacle aside. He’s going to have to trample on the Israelis as he’s been doing over the past few days. He simply has no choice. He’s boxed himself in here.
U.S. Intel: Israel Will Undermine the Deal
JUDGE ANDREW NAPOLITANO: The Washington Post is reporting, which means the CIA is leaking, that U.S. intel has told President Trump that Israel will undermine the deal. I don’t think that’s news. What’s news is that the intelligence community wants it out there. Do you think the Israelis are blind enough to risk Iran’s wrath? According to Larry Johnson, a battle between just Israel and Iran, Israel wouldn’t last more than 6 or 7 days.
JOHN MEARSHEIMER: I find it hard to believe that the Israelis would be foolish enough to take on the Iranians by themselves. But what I find even more foolish is that they want to continue to fight with Trump, with the White House, and with the United States of America. This is not in Israel’s interest.
Israel, as a result of this war, has done enormous damage to its reputation in the United States and around the world. And furthermore, Israel has put the United States in a position where it really has no choice but to cut a deal with the Iranians that is, in effect, a surrender agreement.
The last thing the Israelis want to do is pick a fight with us now and make it even more difficult for us to operationalize this agreement. It’s just not in their interest. They ought to accept the fact that they helped lead us into a foolish war. It’s gone south very quickly, and now the United States and Israel should work together to do everything they can to minimize the damage...MORE
